Teeth-Whitening at Royston Dental Suite

The first impression we make is often a lasting one and the feature most remembered in that first impression is our smile. If your smile is filled with bright, white, healthy teeth, then your first impression is likely to be that you are successful, happy, and have a good personality!!

This isn’t an idle observation; it’s fact, as a 2012 survey conducted by Kelton, a market research consultancy firm, revealed. This survey showed some thought-provoking perceptions:

  • One-third of people surveyed said the first aspect of a person’s appearance that they noticed was their teeth.

  • People with straight, white teeth were perceived by 58% of participants as more likely to land a job, or be successful and wealthy.

  • Half of those surveyed would rather have a nice smile than clear skin – and nearly 90% would give up a luxury, such as desserts or a holiday, to gain a sparkling, memorable smile.

Your best first impression is easily attainable through Royston Dental Suite teeth whitening treatment options.

We believe the benefits of a bright, white smile are multitude – and are delighted to offer you teeth whitening treatments that are affordable (no need to forgo holidays!), quickly completed with little or no discomfort, and produce stunning results. We recognise that all the options available nowadays can confuse our patients and we help explain and choose the most suitable system for each individual.

What Is Tooth Whitening?

Professional tooth whitening is an effective way of lightening the natural colour of your teeth without removing any of your tooth’s surface.

There are a number of reasons why you might get your teeth whitened. Everyone is different; and just as our hair and skin colour vary, so do our teeth. Very few people have brilliant-white teeth.

There are two types of tooth whitening: whitening at the dentist’s surgery or at-home whitening (explained below). Your dentist will be able to discuss with you which type would be best to help you get the result you want.

Results will vary from person to person depending on the original colour of your teeth and your general lifestyle. You can expect tooth whitening carried out by a dental professional to last for around 3 years before you need top-up treatment.

Our teeth whitening systems are, in some cases, able to lighten teeth by several shades within a 90-minute visit, giving you a sparkle and brightness to your smile you might have thought was only reserved for those in the public spotlight.

Many staining factors can cause your teeth to become discoloured, such as:

  • Smoking or using chewing tobacco

  • Eating certain foods known to cause tooth enamel staining, like blueberries

  • Drinking certain beverages, such as red wine, tea and coffee

  • Poor oral hygiene

  • Damage to the tooth root or nerve or deep decay can darken the tooth from within

  • Medications – some are known to cause tooth staining as a side effect

  • Age

Any teeth-whitening product can only whiten natural tooth substance. It will not work on any types of ‘false’ teeth such as dentures, crowns and veneers. At your whitening consultation, we will discuss any such issues with your false or replacement teeth.

Some stains, especially those caused by certain medications, are so resistant to professional whitening treatments that your dentist may recommend the use of dental veneers.

We offer various tooth whitening systems, ranging from take-home kits to in-surgery techniques, or a combination of both. Together we can discuss what will suit your teeth and your lifestyle best – explaining the differences and answer any questions. Your teeth whitening treatment can be scheduled once fillings are completed.

How Is It Done?

Professional bleaching is the most usual method of tooth whitening. At Royston Dental Suite we will assess you first to see whether tooth whitening is suitable for you.  We will tell you about the options you have for tooth whitening and which will be the most suitable for you.

Everything will be explained to you, from what we will do, what we expect you to do, as it's important you follow our instructions over the next few weeks. Finally the cost.

We will then give your mouth a hygiene clean, to remove any stains and scale build-up.

‘Dentist-Supervised Home Whitening’.

The most common type of whitening we use is called ‘dentist-supervised home whitening’.  We will have trays made specially to fit into your mouth like gum-shields. The whitening gel is then put in the trays.  You will be invite to stay in our lounge for 60-90 minutes to make sure everything is fine and your gums have no problems.   You will notice a change in several shades after this first first.  Finally you will be given a routine to follow at home.

‘Chair-Side Whitening

Another option is called ‘chair-side whitening’. You will be told if you are suitable for the treatment, and your dentist will supervise it. First the dentist, hygienist or therapist will put a rubber shield or a gel on your gums to protect them. They will then apply the whitening product to your teeth, again using a specially made tray.

The ‘active ingredient’ in the whitening product is usually hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. As the active ingredient is broken down, oxygen gets into the enamel and dentine on the teeth and the tooth colour is made lighter.

Who cannot provide tooth whitening?

The General Dental Council takes the view that applying materials and carrying out procedures designed to improve the aesthetic appearance of the teeth amounts to 'the practice of dentistry'. This was recently confirmed by the High Court when it overturned a magistrates court’s decision to acquit Ms Lorna Jamous of the offences of practising dentistry and unlawfully carrying on the business of dentistry when not registered by the GDC.

Therefore, this confirms that tooth whitening can only be provided by a qualified and registered dentist, or a dental hygienist or dental therapist working to the prescription of a dentist.
