Periodontal Disease AKA Gum Disease

Chief Executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, Dr Nigel Carter, explains:
“The link between oral health and overall body health is well documented and backed by robust scientific evidence. Despite this, only one in six people realises that people with gum disease may have an increased risk of stroke or diabetes. And only one in three is aware of the heart disease link.”

At Royston Dental Suite we see a lot of people with Periodontal disease (also known as gum disease) is caused by inflammation of the tissues surrounding the teeth.

There are two forms of gum disease;

  • Reversible 'Gingivitis' (inflammation of the gums)

  • Irreversible 'Periodontitis' (inflammation and destruction of a tooth's supporting structures).

We find gum disease can develop painlessly and therefore most people may not be aware of the damage being caused.  The early signs are bleeding gums when you clean or floss, so if you are worried about gum disease or have been told you have it please feel free to book and appointment with our dental team now on 01763 244805 or book live online by clicking here

As part of our routine examinations and check-ups our dentists are trained to perform a ‘Periodontal Evaluation' to assess for signs of gum disease.

A Periodontal Evaluation, is a way to assess your periodontal health by examining:

  • Your teeth

  • Your plaque

  • Your gums

  • Your bite

  • Your bone structure

  • Your risk factors

The risk factors, include poor oral hygiene, smoking, medical history and family history.

After the evaluation the dentist and provide appropriate recommendations and treatment.

Gingivitis:

Gingivitis is caused by inflammation of the gums and always precedes periodontitis. Gingivitis is a reversible condition. Gingivitis usually results in red and sore gums, which can bleed when brushing.

Gingivitis can be controlled with a good oral hygiene regime combined with regular professional scaling with the Dentist

If gingivitis is left untreated it can lead to periodontitis, which results in the loss of bone and gingival tissues, which support and anchor the tooth.

Periodontitis:

Periodontitis is NOT a reversible condition.  As any bone or gingival tissue that may have been lost will not regrow.

HOWEVER PERIODONTITIS CAN BE STOPPED FROM PROGRESSING WITH APPROPRIATE TREATMENT such as:

  • Oral hygiene advice

  • Smoking cessation

  • Scaling and polishing

  • Root surface debridement

  • Surgery (needs specialist referral)
