If in doubt get checked out

There are two things you need to remember about mouth cancer. Early detection saves lives, and if in doubt, get checked out.

The reasons are simple. Mouth cancer cases are rising, and the five-year survival rate of mouth cancer patients is as low as 50 per cent. But early diagnosis gives sufferers a 90 per cent chance of survival.

To make early detection possible, it’s really important you visit your dentist regularly. They are best-placed to spot anything that may need a closer look. If you notice any of these things…

  • Ulcers that do not heal within three weeks

  • Red and white patches in the mouth

  • Unusual lumps or swellings in the mouth

…Then make an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible. Our message is simple – if in doubt, get checked out!

With cases on the rise, it’s worth taking a good look at the risk factors that significantly increase the chances of you developing the disease. The campaign is a great springboard to bringing about long-term changes in your lifestyle that might just save your life.

Tobacco use: This is still the largest reason mouth cancer rates haven’t improved.

Drinking alcohol to excess: There’s plenty of evidence to suggest doing this increases the chances of developing mouth cancer by up to four times. Doing this and smoking – as so many people do – increases the risk by up to 30 times.

Human papillomavirus (HPV): Transmitted via oral sex, this risk factor is forecast to overtake smoking as the largest cause of mouth cancer within the next decade.

Poor diet: If you get your recommended five portions of fruit and vegetables a day, you can lower your risk.

A growing number of people are developing the disease without displaying any traditional risk factors. The average age of sufferers is rapidly falling and the number of women developing the disease is increasing too. These facts underline the need for check-ups and self-examination, so remember the signs and symptoms and our message – if in doubt, get checked out.
